Barclays Premier League: Middlesbrough Vs West Ham, Match Report, Highlights Video

Played on:Saturday November 1, 2008, 11th Day, Venue: Riverside Stadium
Ross Turnbull's late double save from Lee Bowyer and Jack Collison earned Middlesbrough a highly entertaining draw with West Ham.

Match Report

A late goal by substitute Mido salvaged a point for Middlesbrough as West Ham United ended their run of four successive defeats.

Boro were unchanged following their midweek 2-0 win over Manchester City while West Ham gave forward Freddie Sears his first start of the season.

Sears raced away in an early counter-attack and shot past the far post with a scoring chance.

Central defender Chris Riggott cut out the danger from another fast West Ham move with a brilliant challenge.

The visitors went ahead through Hayden Mullins from a pass by Luis Boa Morte. Mullins beat Ross Turnbull with a shot that struck the angle of an upright and a crossbar.

Despite spraying the ball around in the early stages Middlesbrough showed no cutting-edge and West Ham began to gain in confidence. They looked the more dangerous side with Wales captain Craig Bellamy a live-wire in attack.

Boro were being over-run in midfield at this stage and no doubt manager Gareth Southgate will look to strengthen this department in the January transfer window.

It was an anxious time for Southgate with his side struggling.

Mullins shot high and wide for the visitors while goalkeeper Robert Green palmed the ball away from the head of Boro striker Afonso Alves as the Brazilian threatened at the far post.

Middlesbrough fans were not happy with the first-half performance of their team and some boos rang out as the teams walked off the field.

The Teessiders needed to improve in the second half if they were to pull the game around. Didier Digard lost possession to Bellamy but fortunately for Boro, Riggott was able to cut out the danger.

Jack Collison should have increased the lead for West Ham when Bellamy laid on a perfect chance but Turnbull was quick to the challenge.

Mido was introduced after 67 minutes for a disappointing Alves and his introduction had an important impact.

Green brought off a brilliant save from a fierce Gary O'Neil shot while at the other end second-half substitute Justin Hoyte beat Green with a header shortly after but he was ruled offside.

With seven minutes to go, Mido was fouled just outside the box. The former Spurs player picked himself up and crashed a powerful shot through the wall of defenders.

In stoppage time, two brilliant Turnbull saves from substitute Lee Bowyer and Collison prevented West Ham from snatching only their second win at the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough: Turnbull, Wheater (Hoyte 46), Riggott, Pogatetz, Taylor, Aliadiere, O'Neil, Digard (Arca 56), Downing, Sanli, Alves (Mido 67).

Manchester United Vs Hull City English Premier League Highlights Video

Barclays Premier League: Manchester United Vs Hull City, Match Report, Highlights Video
Played on: Saturday November 1, 2008, 11th Day, Venue: Old Trafford
Manchester United survived a late rally by Hull to move up to third place in the Premier League.

Match Report
Manchester United almost paid the penalty for taking their foot off the pedal as Hull City gave the Premier League champions the fright of their lives at Old Trafford.

Leading 4-1, with a shade over 20 minutes of the game remaining, it looked as if United were heeding manager Sir Alex Ferguson's exhortations to improve their goal difference.

But Hull's never-say-die attitude, combined with United's complacency, made for a tense and thrilling finale which saw Ferguson's side scrape home by the odd goal in seven.

United got off to a flying start when they scored after only three minutes. Gary Neville, making his 550th appearance for United crossed the ball in from the right.

Cristiano Ronaldo produced an audacious flick back to Dimitar Berbatov who was hovering on the right corner of the Hull penalty area.

Berbatov touched the ball back to Ronaldo, who scored with a low left-foot shot from 15 yards which went in off the post.

Hull's height and strength caused United defensive problems as was apparent with the Tigers equaliser in the 23rd minute.

Andy Dawson floated in a free-kick from the right side of the United box and Daniel Cousin out-jumped Patrice Evra in an uneven contest on the nearside of the six-yard box to send his glancing header beyond goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and into the far corner of the net.

United restored their lead courtesy of a glorious move in the 29th minute. Nemanja Vidic's pass out of defence found Wayne Rooney, who touched the ball off to Berbatov.

The Bulgarian found Michael Carrick racing in on the left side of the Hull box and his crisp low left-foot shot from 15 yards went in off the foot of the far post.

With the game moving towards first-half stoppage time, United made it 3-1. Nani's corner to the near post saw Ronaldo jump above three Hull defenders to head in from ten yards.

When Vidic made it 4-1 after 57 minutes - shooting home Rooney's corner right footed from seven yards, it looked as if it was going to be the second thrashing in a week for Hull.

But the Tigers roared back as the pressure they applied on United, together with the champions' lethargy, started to produce mistakes.

One such came in the 69th minute when Cousin drove a ball from the left towards Bernard Mendy on the right side of the United penalty area.

Evra was favourite to clear but, under pressure from Mendy, he headed the ball into the Hull substitute's path and his excellent chip beat van der Sar and crossed the line, despite Vidic's heroic effort to clear.

Then, in the 82nd minute, Rio Ferdinand brought down Mendy on the left side of the United box.

Referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot and Geovanni stepped up to blast his right-footed penalty beyond van der Sar and into the top right corner of the net.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Carrick (Giggs 72), Anderson (O'Shea 88), Nani (Tevez 64), Berbatov, Rooney.

Stoke City Vs Arsenal English Premier League Highlights Video

Barclays Premier League: Stoke City Vs Arsenal, Match Report, Highlights Video
Saturday November 1, 2008, 11th Day,Played at: Venue Britannia Stadium
Ricardo Fuller and Seyi Olofinjana both scored after long throw-ins by Rory Delap as Arsenal capitulated and also had Robin van Persie sent 0ff.

Match Report:
Rory Delap's almost legendary long throws led to both of Stoke City's goals as Tony Pulis' men gained a memorable victory against mighty Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger's side never got to grips with the aerial power of their hosts and, despite bags of possession, they hardly tested home goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

Arsenal bossed the early stages, but that meant nothing when fine play between Mamady Sidibe and Ricardo Fuller led to Delap's first long throw of the match in the 11th minute.

Delap's wind-assisted delivery was huge and it only required the slightest of touches from the head of Fuller before the ball flashed inside Manuel Almunia's right-hand post.

The goal gave Stoke huge belief and Arsenal appeared shell-shocked as the underdogs pressed hard for a second.

Stoke almost got it in the 20th minute when Delap looped a header over the stranded Almunia and Gael Clichy had to clear the ball off the line.

Arsenal finally landed a blow of note five minutes later when Emmanuel Adabeyor's 20-yard shot was held low down to his left by Sorensen.

And a magnificent pass from Cesc Fabregas deserved better than a poor chest control by Nicklas Bendtner, which allowed Sorensen to claim the loose ball.

But Stoke, well organised and biting into their challenges, were largely untroubled and continued to give their illustrious visitors problems at the other end of the field.

The Arsenal defence was struggling to deal with Sidibe, in particular, with City making the most of their height and weight advantage.

Arsenal, no doubt given a stern half-time talking-to by Wenger, upped the ante after the interval with Fabregas pulling most of the strings.

But Stoke remained a tough nut to crack and Wenger made his first change in the 58th minute with Theo Walcott brought on in place of Bacary Sagna.

The young England star won a corner from his first touch and Kolo Toure almost levelled when he volleyed Fabregas' delivery a foot too high.

Robin Van Persie soon followed Walcott into the attack, with Denilson making way, as Wenger went for broke.

But Arsenal were left with a mountain to climb in the 73rd minute when another Delap throw was flicked on by Ryan Shawcross and Seyi Olofinjana bundled in the loose ball.

And it was as good as over three minutes later when Van Persie was sent shown a straight red card for a ridiculous kick and barge on Sorensen.

But there was a sad ending to the game when a poor challenge by Delap resulted in Walcott being stretchered from the field with a leg injury in stoppage time.

Clichy scored with long range shot which took two deflections from Fabregas' short free-kick, but it proved only a consolation as Stoke ran down the clock against nine men.

Stoke: Sorensen, Griffin, Abdoulaye Faye, Shawcross, Higginbotham, Amdy Faye, Olofinjana, Diao (Whelan 78), Delap, Fuller (Cresswell 86), Sidibe (Kitson 90).
Subs Not Used: Simonsen, Soares, Wilkinson, Sonko.

West Brom Vs Blackburn Rovers English Premier League Highlights Video

Barclays Premier League: West Brom v Blackburn Rovers, Match Report, Highlights Video

Saturday November 1, 2008, Played at: The Hawthorns
West Brom and Blackburn shared the spoils in an intense and entertaining battle with Keith Andrews spoiling the home party with a last-gasp equaliser.

Match Report
Keith Andrews chose the perfect moment to score his first goal for ten-men Blackburn Rovers as his last gasp strike salvaged a point in a dramatic encounter at West Bromwich Albion.

Blackburn, who had to play for 55 minutes a man down after their opening goalscorer Benni McCarthy was sent off, were facing defeat following second-half goals from Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller.

But Andrews, a £1.3million capture from MK Dons in September, popped up in the last minute to rescue a share of the spoils.

It was rough on Albion who had fought back from McCarthy's early goal with a storming second-half display.

Even after Andrews struck, they still had a chance to win the game, but Bednar saw his header saved by Paul Robinson.

The draw did at least end Albion's run of three straight defeats but this was two points thrown away.

Blackburn are now five games without a win but Paul Ince can take heart from his side's commitment to chase a seemingly lost cause.

Albion got off to the worst possible start when Ryan Donk, who conceded the penalty that put them on the way to defeat at Newcastle United on Tuesday, landed them in trouble again by gifting Blackburn a spot-kick.

There appeared little danger when Jason Roberts collected the ball with his back to goal on the right-hand side of the area.

But for some inexplicable reason Donk grabbed his shirt and referee Michael Jones had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.

McCarthy made no mistake with his spot-kick which he blasted past Scott Carson - little knowing this his match would shortly be over.

Albion's players were visibly angered by the penalty and immediately went in search of an equaliser.

But James Morrison's drive was beaten away by Paul Robinson, Borja Valero chipped over the bar and Gianni Zuiverloon failed to get his header on target from Paul Robinson's cross.

Albion's hopes were then raised when McCarthy needlessly saw red. McCarthy, who had been booked in the 19th minute for a foul on Jonathan Greening, was dismissed after 35 minutes when he handled a clearance from team-mate Martin Olsson while tussling with Donk.

While that should have given Albion an edge, Blackburn were unfortunate not to increase their lead before half-time.

Brett Emerton's injury-time strike from 18 yards was goalbound, before being tipped around the post by Carson.

It was a decisive moment as fired-up Albion launched a furious assault at the start of the second half and were rewarded in the 55th minute after 60 seconds of penalty area chaos.

Miller hit the post with a low drive and in attempting to make his clearance, Blackburn skipper Ryan Nelsen crashed the ball against the post and crossbar.

Robinson then beat away Robert Koren's drive but Blackburn's luck ran out when Valero fed Miller and his short pass was converted by Bednar from 12 yards.

Blackburn were being completely overrun at this stage and Miller's wonder strike completed the Albion comeback.

Picked out by Greening with his back to goal, Miller turned neatly before beating Robinson with a powerful drive in the 62nd minute.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game, but never-say-die Blackburn were not to be denied and when Roberts won the ball he fed Andrews, who beat Carson with a low 20-yard drive.

West Brom: Carson, Zuiverloon, Donk (Hoefkens 46), Olsson, Robinson, Koren, Greening, Morrison (Brunt 69), Borja Valero, Bednar, Miller (Moore 80).

Subs Not Used: Kiely, Cech, Kim, Pele.

Chelsea Vs Sunderland English Premier League Highlights Video

Barclays Premier League: Chelsea Vs Sunderland, Match Report, Highlights Video
Played at:Saturday November 1, 2008, 11th Day,Venue: Stamford Bridge
Nicolas Anelka hit a hat-trick as Chelsea demolished Sunderland and moved above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Match Report
Nicolas Anelka grabbed a hat-trick as Chelsea ran riot against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge, hammering them 5-0.

Further goals from Alex and Frank Lampard, his 100th Premier League goal, completed the rout.

Chelsea went back to the top of the league, albeit for a couple of hours, and served a warning to the rest of the Premier League that their home defeat last week to Liverpool was just a blip.

Chelsea's first effort on the Sunderland goal came on three minutes from Florent Malouda, surprisingly shooting from distance with his right foot with the unsurprising result that it went wide of goal.

Four minutes later, Ashley Cole found himself in an advanced position working well with Malouda, but a tussle with Pascal Chimbonda saw the left-back scuff his shot from six yards out.

Malouda forced the first save from Marton Fulop of the match on 15 minutes, diving well to his left. But a minute later he was beaten all ends up when Deco let fly from just outside the visitor's area, only for his right-footer to skim off the crossbar to safety.

But the deserved breakthrough came on 27 minutes when Joe Cole weaved his way through the Sunderland defence and daisy-cutted a left footer.

Fulop could only deflect the ball across goal into the gleeful path of centre-back Alex who coolly slotted home, unmarked from two yards.

Alex then assisted number two, three minutes later. Lampard sent in a low ball on the right. The ball was pushed on by Alex but Anelka, seemingly in an offside position tapped the ball home - again from two yards out.

The first substitution of the match involved Ashley Cole, who was injured in a clash with Steed Malbranque and was replaced by Wayne Bridge on 36 minutes.

The third goal cam on 45 minutes and again it was a tap-in. A quick counter-attack saw Sunderland's rearguard completely humbled as Malouda's pinpoint pass to Anelka, this time, onside, gave the striker the easiest of chance to flick the ball into the empty net.

Roy Keane rang the half-time changes replacing the ineffectual Malbranque and Martyn Waghorn with El-Hadji Diouf and Jordan Henderson, but it made no difference and the Blues took just another five minutes to hit number four.

This time Joe Cole's expertly chipped right byline cross was met powerfully by Lampard's header.

It got worse for Sunderland two minutes later when Anelka notched his hat-trick goal sliding in from eight yards out to meet Malouda's left byline cross. Sadly for Fulop, his despairing dive only helped he ball over the line.

Djibril Cisse came on for Kenwyne Jones in the 58th minute with the job of hitting six goals while Chelsea withdrew Joe Cole for Didier Drogba five minutes later.

Sunderland finally got into Chelsea's area on 67 minutes but Petr Cech palmed the ball out of the way of the advancing Cisse and the attack petered out.

Carlos Mineiro, an out-of-contract player from Hertha Berlin, made his Chelsea debut for Anelka on 75 minutes as Chelsea ran down the clock and gained three valuable points.

Everton Vs Fulham English Premier League Highlights Video

Barclays Premier League: Everton Vs Fulham, Match Report, Highlights Video
Played at:Saturday November 1, 2008, 11th Day,Venue: Goodison Park
Louis Saha's late winner against his former club Fulham gave Everton their first home Premier League win of the season after 87 minutes of frustration.

Match Report
Everton subjected Fulham to their 16th consecutive defeat at Goodison Park after a late Louis Saha header gave the Blues their first home win of the season.

After dominating the first half Everton faced a much tougher second 45 minutes with Fulham battling for every ball and crashing two efforts against the woodwork.

David Moyes' men went into the game full of confidence on the back of a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, and a 1-0 win at Bolton in midweek.

Everton piled the pressure on the visitors back line from the off and within the first two minutes a high ball into the box from captain Phil Neville found the head of the free-scoring Marouane Fellaini.

The towering midfielder expertly directed the ball to the on-rushing Tim Cahill but his swing miss allowed Fulham to clear their lines.

Making his first start for Everton in a month, Cahill looked sharp and it was his determination on 10 minutes that won the ball deep in the Fulham half and released Mikel Arteta down the left.

His whipped in cross flew straight to the head of Steven Pienaar but the young midfielder seemed surprised by the ball's pace and could only direct his effort into the arms of a grateful Mark Schwarzer.

Having been camped in their own half for most of the opening 20 minutes, Fulham struggled to play their way around a solid Everton defence but it was Jimmy Bullard who had the first strike at goal for the visitors but his 25 yard-effort only found Row Z.

The visitors began to string a few passes together and a ball onto the chest of Bobby Zamora on the edge of the Everton area was accurately played off to his strike partner Andy Johnson.

The former Everton striker rolled the ball to Bullard who once again drilled from distance but failed to trouble Tim Howard.

Everton looked the better side going forward and should have taken the lead just before the half-hour mark after Arteta had played a nice one-two with Yakubu. The Spaniard drove a low pass across the edge of the box to Fellaini who was looking for his fourth goal in five matches.

The 20-year-old blasted his shot past a sprawling Schwarzer only for the ball to hit the foot of the post and no-one was following up to turn home the rebound.

Johnson had the best chance of the half when Zamora challenged Blues keeper Howard at the front post and.

Under pressure from the former Spurs and West Ham striker, Howard could only palm the ball to the feet of Johnson but, after deciding against a first-time shot, he allowed the Blues to get back and clear the danger.

The second half was a much tighter affair with Fulham chasing down every ball and making the Everton midfield work twice as hard as in the first 45 minutes but it was Moyes' side that had the first chance to open the scoring.

Finding himself on the left with only wing-back John Paintsil to beat, Arteta performed a single step-over to give himself the room to whip a ball in to Cahill who powered a header inches over the bar.

Roy Hodgson had fired up his players at half-time and the response was almost instant when Zamora's cross was met by Zoltan Gera who smashed his header against the bar.

Fulham were again unlucky on 72 minutes when Bullard's 25-yard free-kick was heading towards the top corner only for Howard to somehow get a hand to the ball and palm it down.

It went straight to Zamora who shot across the face of goal only to once again be denied by the woodwork.

Everton thought they had snatched the lead when a long punt from Howard took one bounce and invited a challenge from substitute striker Victor Anichebe on Schwarzer who dropped the ball into his own net.

However, the whistle went for a foul much to the bewilderment of the entire Everton squad.

The game was won with only three minutes left on the clock after a battling Leon Osman fought to keep hold of the ball deep in the Fulham half and his high cross was met by the head of Saha - his first Toffees goal against his former club.

Australia tour of India 3rd Test: Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India Vs Australia at Delhi, Day 4(Four) Highlights video Oct 29-Nov 2, 2008
So that is stumps on day four. A very good day for Australia. Clarke was their star, batting responsibly and riding his luck to hit his eighth Test century, and there were handy contributions from Watson and White along the way as Australia batted till 577, just 36 behind India's first inning total. Heading into day five, India are 79 ahead, having lost Sehwag and Ishant, sent in as nightwatchman. A good way for Australia to end their day of dominance, with the new-ball pairing taking a wicket each.
Close of play day 4 -
India 2nd innings 43/2 (G Gambhir 21*, R Dravid 5*, 13 over)

There wasn't a lot for India today. Their fielding was ragged and the catching very poor, with three straightforward catches going down off Clarke. Sehwag took his maiden five-wicket haul, exploiting the rough in the track, and Kumble took three down the order.

All in all, Australia's day. They will be pleased with their efforts.
